Area information of the Costa Brava in Spain
The Costa Brava is situated in the North East of Spain and is the most Northern coastal area of the Catalonia region. It stretches out over more then 200 kilometres from Port Bou - at the extensions of the Pyrenees – to Blanes in the South. The area has a very characteristic landscape and an irregular coastline with rocky cliffs stretching into the sea. Numerous picturesque fishing villages and places with nice sandy beaches provide a unique natural beauty.
The year round the pleasant climate is less extreme than that of the southern parts of Spain, as a result of which the area is lush with cornfields, pine tree forests, cypresses, olives and cork oaks. The beaches vary from long and sandy, like Playa de Pals to small intimate coves like Sa Riera near Begur, Aiguablava and Tamariu, where the Costa Brava (rough coast) actually begins.
The region provides pleasure for everyone. You can play excellent golf here, but you can dive and snorkel as well, hike and ski in the Pyrenees (at a two-hour drive), ride horseback, sail, surf, etcetera. And of course you can swim and enjoy the sun at the many beaches, small and large.
You can enjoy the many historic places, museums and art. Artists like Dali, Miro and Picasso were inspired by the area. To enjoy culture you can visit the cities of Barcelona, Figueras and Girona. The Dali museum in Figueres is a particular “must”. But also the many picturesque places, like the well known medieval villages of Pals and Peretallada offer an exceptional experience.
If you enjoy discovering tasty food in surprising atmospheres and surroundings, the Catalan Cuisine will be another highlight of your trip. The area is packed with restaurants to suit all types of tastes, from the simplest farmhouse cooking to the highest quality Catalan dishes. The area boasts many wine co-operatives that produce reds, whites, refreshing rosés and excellent sparkling Cavas to accompany your meal.
Barcelona has an airport where most of the mayor airline companies offer flights to at a regular base, as do many low budget companies like Easyjet, Vueling, Air Berlin, Virgin Express, Transavia and Ryanair. The last two mentioned offer regular flights to Girona as well.
